LIGHT VS. DARK.
In this sub unit I would like to explore light vs. dark in ways that different artists convey their styles just from this monochrome style. By looking at contemporary styles and their influences from older arrangements, i'll be able to see in which areas things are kept similar and changed.

Frank Miller - SIN CITY.
Influenced by Chiaroskuro's film noir, frank millers sin city displays quite similar styles to his work, while bringing in a more contemporary aspect.

Kai Ziehl.
Kai Zeihls use of line creates structure and balance, for example in this image that I took, the use of shadows create line, though slightly jagged. but still slightly show a course of sequencing, and control.
PHOTOSHOOT: PADDINGTON STATION/ EARLS COURT STATION. (Slideshow)
I chose Paddington Station for this project because I knew that i could replicate the work of Kai Zeihl as there is an amazing amount of lines in the station, that I felt it would be similar to the photographer work, but a lot more intricate. Whilst shooting i experimented with the zoom of the images, the angles i took and experimented with changing the aperture setting on the camera, to contrast the images more to look similar to the photographers work.
I first changed the saturation of the images to fully black and white, I contemplated whether or not to leave them less saturated to show a bit more liveliness to the photos. but I decided that they looked alot more intriguing in black and white.
|
I then used the 'shadows and highlights' tool to create more of a contrast. I wanted to make the images look slightly disorientated in a way that makes them look warped, or even rotated, for example if i rotate this image, it can look like half of an archway.
|
After using the shadows and highlights tool i still was not convinced the images were satisfactory, so by using the 'levels' tool I was able to achieve what I felt looked good and showed a bit more of my own work from photographer replication.

MINI FINAL PIECE (Click To Enlarge).
I really like the use of line used within all the images, though some more intricate than others. It shows stability and peace amongst confusion and the contrasting effects compliment well with use of light and shadow.
Further experimentation.
In Kai Ziehls images, he incorporates people that are small but stand out due to interfering with the use of line, however i want to use his idea but without it looking so similar to his work. Therefore I have decided to make it look quite sinister, by using settings that are quite empty and lifeless, supposedly to make them quite eerie, which is an aspect of light and shadow I have not really explored before.

PHOTOSHOOT #3
PROCESS OF EDITING.
I started of by making a quick selection of the model, also using the feather and smooth tools i was able to select the model with non-jagged lines.
|
I then copied and pasted the selection onto the landscape image.
|
It was difficult to scale and position the model as I could have created whatever scale I wanted, but I chose to have quite a far off scale, to hopefully create the eerie component.
|
I then played around with some of the layer options, and i like how the overlay layer looked with my images, and overlayed the landscape on top of the model to create the next look/
|
The overlay tool produced this effect and i think it produced a very sinister look - its quite there but its also quite not there.
|
Then using the brightness and contrast tools i was able to help the model fit the hues of the surroundings, so it looks as if it was all shot together.
|
Compare.
I think for this image, the use of the overlay tool works better, as it does not allow the option to try and blend into the background on full opacity, unless around the edges but i don't feel that would work.
|
Like i said I do not think that this opacity of the model works in this image, I think for possibly my other final pieces it will work very well as opposed to this effect i have created for this final image.
